Here's the way in which I presume your comment was interpreted:

You are not [supposed to make your boss look good].

Not that I would've interpreted it that way, however.

Yes, sorry. He actually meant: "You are not the only one who thinks that part of your job is making your boss look good."

Kinda seems obvious now.
