I remember solid-state piezoelectric "flapping blade" air movers in the surplus market in the 80s; they were all over the Jerryco and Edmund catalogs.

Never did get my hands on one. But I wonder how that technology relates to these new things.

There's actually piezoelectric effect in use here too, except on very small scale. It's quite ingenious, in my opinion and I root for that technology.
