I thought the recent post about branchless optimization in Rust was pretty cool.

This morning I came across a HN post about someone's hand rolled word counter in C. I realized it was a great candidate to remove branches from the inner loop.

It gets more than a 2x speed up when branches are removed. Fun little experiment.
