But the GP commenter specifically compared the cost of solutions such as Claude Code against a 32 GB model.
If they are going to compare cost, they should compare to the cost of a hosted ~32 GB model.
Or if privacy trumps everything for them, then just say that and don't bother comparing costs of incredibly disparate solutions, as Claude Code costing $100+ a month was a red herring if they're happy with 32 GB model output - they could have compared to a far cheaper option that matched their local model's quality.
I'm up to my 3rd prototype of a device that combines GPS with TERCOM style algorithms using a bunch of sensors for use in areas that have terrible GPS coverage (initial use was canyoning). Hopefully, when I receive the samples, I'll have ironed out most of the hardware faults!
I've also just (sort of) finished a TinyGo version of firmware that runs on a cheap Adafruit board in combination with Gaudi Lab's OpenThereminV3 shield to provide MIDI theremin capabilities for live music performance. It’s hard to prove these things of course but you have to ask yourself who benefits most from these kind of attacks and sabotage? Who benefits from a weakened and infighting Europe?

I think reputation and warranties are insufficient. While building a reputation may be expensive, destroying a reputation can be profitable (in the short term). Warranties can also be made less effective by making the buyer spend excessive time and effort to enforce the warranty. The company sets the terms and effectively their interpretation, so after two years of waiting, nudging, waiting, complaining, waiting, threatening, and waiting one finally gets an "equivalent value" replacement (and the warranty clock was running during that time).
The company might also go bankrupt with much of its profits having gone to owners and decision makers who are not bound to honor the warranty.
The CE mark is worthless, since it is a self-certificaton.
The UL mark is valuable, as are the other test lab marks. However, while an ethical storefront would require it, Amazon does not. I've bought plenty of things that are not listed, and if I want safe products I generally have to include "UL" or "ETL" in my search. Even that doesn't always work, I've seen products on there claiming a listing in the title but photo shopping the place where the UL logo ought to be off of their product images.
Not asserting this is definitely a Russian op (given the amount of simultaneous farmers' protests and all in NL today), but their modus operandi for foreign operations of this kind involves paying random thugs a few hundred to a couple thousand euros to carry out acts of sabotage using whatever items they have on hand. The items don't need to match, the people involved don't need to know each other.
I think this is the definition of a polarising topic. It's very hard to hold a sensible middle ground without everyone wanting to take it to extremes of either "AI is just useless autocomplete" or "AI has solved software engineering".
Yup, I consider it just bad (narrative) memory compounded by aphantasia. Can watch a film or read a book and barely remember what was there the next day. Same for life events, with exception of very strong emotional triggers, or very well-connected systems - ie could describe better some system I was building 15 years ago than what last christmas was like (i assume it happened, there are pictures).
For me, recall is bad, but recognition is OK - things 'come back' easily with hints or photos. But I guess that's how memory tends to work, and motivation to plenty of pictures/videos.
It's not a sophisticated take but if you haven't really thought about inflation before and its relationship to monetary supply it's a pretty good illustration. I'd not really want to knock someone for having an insight.
I switched to Everything for search a while ago and haven’t looked back. For the start menu I replace it with Open Shell, which seems to find apps much more reliably.
The AI machine can write better code, it can also write an interpreter which implements function calls by instantiating a new interpreter + entire standard library per function call. Or it will build a 300kloc cathedral of scaffolding and maintain that forever, never writing actual code. Or it will create a CI system that takes 2 hours to run and constantly fails, and the agent loops there all day, fixing a small bug and waiting 2 hours.
Agentic engineering faces all kinds of new problems that couldn’t exist before, and need experienced engineers to solve them.
If there are very few humans that can do this is because the market for such a task is very small and thus there is little incentive to learn how to do it or produce tools that can do it.
Putin became a meme. He's almighty and weak at the same time. He's the Zar, Stalin AND Hitler in one person. He's been cloned at least a dozen times but seems to have a grave illness and will die soon. On the one hand it's funny to watch how people are losing their minds over it but on the other it just prevents a clear dialogue and assessment of a politician.
Define Europeans - us Poles absolutely understand the danger. In fact I'd say we're already at war with Russia, the way they attack our democracy, our institutions and politics daily. But someone in Portugal might not see it the same way we do.

I have no clue what "weasel words" mean. None of this is common in my native language or socio economic up bringing. One of things I've learned in life is to know your audience. Speak words that anyone can understand. I have very clearly articulated the definition of what "small majority" means to the point that anyone can comprehend it. Instead of circling the drink why don't you psychoanalyze "what i really mean". Or more like what think the deep rooted issue is here? What am i not saying?
